Tips About Lapel Mics

If you have purchased the Elements of Speaking II CD, then you already have some information on using lapel mics.  This post offers a few more tips on the matter in the form of some simple Do's and Don'ts.

If your mic has a separate on/off switch, remember to turn it on before you start speaking and turn it off when you finish.

Windscreens are an inexpensive investment for your mic.
DON'T
  • Turn your head to the extreme left or right
  • Wear large, clanging earrings or other jewelry
  • Completely cover the mic with clothing or allow anything to rub against it

DO
  • Do keep your head and torso lined up.  Since the mic is stationary, moving your head left and right will cause the volume to fluctuate.  In some cases, the audience may not hear parts of your message at all.  Practice keeping your head and torso in line so you can look natural rather than robotic.
  • Wear jewelry that will not touch or rub on the mic - the audience may hear it.  If you record your presentation, expect to hear your jewelry, too.  Make certain nothing on you is making more noise than you.
  • Be careful of any notes, books, folders, or anything you might have in your hand.
  • Feed and conceal the cord under your clothes.
  • Wear something that will allow the battery or recorder to attach to something in the back of your garment and be out of sight.
